The United States reaches its debt ceiling, causing investors to speculate on how it could affect financial markets. Annual Market Review 2022
Developed Equities
As we turn the page to 2023, markets remain volatile. On a year to date basis as of 30 December 2022, the energy sector outperformed other sectors by delivering a return of 47.3%. This return was driven by the high energy prices we witnessed last year, as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We believe that oil prices will remain volatile as cease-fire talks seem far from sight.
August 2022 Market Commentary
The month of August was, on the whole, rather subdued. As we forecasted, bullish momentum peaked with the upside move likely exacerbated by positive dealer gamma, better than feared Q3 earnings, and a relief rally led by businesses most prone to short-term interest rates.
July 2022 Market Commentary
The month of July certainly left many scratching their heads. One of our leading indicators of GDP, the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI), continued its dangerously bearish decline while US CPI headlined at 9.1% YOY. This was followed up by a confirmation that second quarter GDP had in fact declined while 5 year inflation breakeven rose back to 2.7%.
June 2022 Market Commentary
Though the US equity markets fell yet again, June was a much tamer month despite our leading and lagging economic indicators not being particularly bullish. May 2022 Market Commentary
May was an interesting month for global equity markets. Although it’s historically been one of the worst ones, hence ‘sell in May and go away’ there were some good things to focus on, namely the FTSE and S&P 500’s positive return. However, we remain overwhelmingly bearish and see positive trends reversing over the next few months. Here are some of the things that caught our attention.
February 2022 Market Commentary
February brought more uncertainty, not just to the markets, but to the whole world. For those that are not watching, please see below graphs from Bloomberg showing the last 1-month movements for the world’s major indexes. Bleak reading with all major indexes in the red and all close to erasing the last year worth of gains.
January 2022 Market Commentary
Over the last month we have seen some crazy market moves, if you are not watching, see below graphs from Bloomberg showing the last 1-month movements for the world’s major indexes, a sea of red, except for, unsurprisingly the FTSE 100, which is just ‘head above water’ right now.
